The La Jolla Map and Atlas Museum features maps that span 500 years, from the 15th century all the way to the mid-20th century. The maps are from all over the world, but most of the collection can be traced back to European roots.

The maps are a part of the Stone Map and Atlas Foundation, headed by local businessman and philanthropist Michael Stone, who has been collecting maps for 20 years.

“It was just not right having them locked up in an oversized closet,” said Stone, who also serves on the board of the San Diego Museum of Art and is an advisory board member for the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library. “This material needs to be seen and appreciated.”

The new La Jolla museum — believed to be the only one of its kind West of the Mississippi — has “a very comprehensive collection of cartographic materials that spans well over 500 years — all under one roof,” said Stone, a La Jolla resident for the past seven years. The maps and atlases will be “very well displayed and described. There are very few venues of this sort anywhere.”

The unique collection includes items that “would typically be considered ‘rare cartographic material’ and most items have some critical importance in a historical or political context,” Stone said.
